Former Southampton youth coach Bob Higgins faces charges of 65 sex attacks on young players

It has been reported in the Sun that a former Southampton youth coach Bob Higgins appeared in court on the 20th of July accused of 65 sex attacks on young players.

The 64-year-old allegedly preyed on 23 lads who were all under 17 over three decades between 1970 and 1996.

He was quizzed last December following a nationwide probe into historic sexual abuse in football.

Higgins – who hid his face as he entered Southampton magistrates court – indicated he would deny all the charges.

The offences are made up of indecent assaults and attempted indecent assaults.

However, prosecutor Dan O’Neill said: “These matters are not suitable for summary trial.

“They are substantial offences spanning three decades. It’s my respectful submission the appropriate venue is the crown court.”

Higgins, of Southampton, was part of the youth system at Southampton FC in the 1980s and was youth team manager at Peterborough United from May 1995 to April 1996.

He was still coaching adults at Fleet Town, Hants when cops first received complaints against him.

JP Alan Foster told him: “You have pleaded not guilty to these offences.

“You will go to be tried at Winchester Crown Court.”

He was granted bail to appear on August 16.
