A house fire in Greater Manchester has raised safety concerns that may be relevant to grassroots football families, following reports that an electrical device commonly used to dry sports boots may have been involved in the incident.

A family home was left heavily smoke-damaged and uninhabitable after a fire broke out in a garage at a residential property. The fire is reported to be under investigation, with an electric boot-drying device among the items believed to be a possible factor. The device had reportedly been used to dry children’s sports boots, a common practice in grassroots football households, particularly during winter months.

The occupant returned home to find the property filling with smoke and contacted the emergency services. Fire crews attended and brought the situation under control; however, the damage to the home was extensive. The family — two adults and two children — are understood to have temporarily relocated while repairs are assessed, which may take a significant period of time.

“It was terrifying,” she said. “We are so lucky to be alive. Ten minutes later and my whole house would have fully burnt down.”

The individual later described the experience as overwhelming, explaining that the smell appeared electrical in nature. Firefighters subsequently confirmed that opening the garage door could have presented additional danger at the time.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed attendance at the incident and stated:

“At shortly after 11.10am on Tuesday, January 13, three fire engines from Rochdale and Oldham fire station were called to a fire involving the garage of a detached house on Whitebeam Close, Oldham.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reels to extinguish the fire and made the area safe alongside partners.

“The suspected cause of the fire was a fault with an electric device.”

The product referenced in reports was advertised as a “portable quick-dry shoe dryer” with a “220 volt British plug” and has since been removed from sale on TikTok Shop while further enquiries take place.

TikTok said: “We take the safety of our customers extremely seriously and we’re concerned to hear about this incident.
We have removed this product from our platform whilst we fully investigate this issue.”

A spokesperson for TeamGrassroots said the incident highlights the importance of ongoing safety awareness within the grassroots football community:

“Safety must always be the most important thing — especially when it comes to children and families. While investigations are ongoing, this situation is concerning because it involves a type of product commonly found in grassroots football households.”

They added:

“We would encourage parents, coaches, and volunteers to take a moment to review any electrical products used to dry boots or sports kit, particularly those purchased online. If there are any concerns around safety, certification, or condition, the product should not be used.”

“Grassroots football relies on families and volunteers, and ensuring their safety — both at home and around the game — must always come first.”

REMINDER OF THE FA GUIDANCE AROUND U6S PLAYING FOOTBALL.

A reminder of the FA guidance for U6s is below. Children under the age of 6 should not be permitted or encouraged to play in a football match of any kind.

To clarify, FA Rule 8(C) states the following, A child who has not attained the age of six shall not play, and shall not be permitted or encouraged to play, in a match of any kind. The rule is clear, a child who is under the age of 6 cannot play in football matches, including those arranged for competitive or ‘friendly’ purposes with other clubs.

Football clubs, coaches, parents, and organisers often wonder when children can start playing formal matches. The Football Association (FA) has clear rules about Under-6s (children who have not yet turned six). This article explains the current regulations, the rationale behind them, and how to ensure compliance.

What the Rules Say

Rule: FA Rule C / SCORY / Youth Code of Rules
Under FA Rule C (Relating to Players), and the Standard Code of Rules for Youth Competitions (SCORY), the FA states:

“A child who has not attained the age of six shall not play, and shall not be permitted or encouraged to play, in a match of any kind.”

This applies to any match, whether competitive or friendly. “Match” refers to organised contests/scrimmages vs other teams, whether formally affiliated or not.

Affiliated Tournaments & Festivals
Any match between affiliated clubs (or events that involve multiple clubs) for U6s is not allowed. These rules also apply to tournaments or friendlies advertised for U6-level players.

Potential Consequences of Breach
Clubs found to be arranging or participating in matches involving children under six can face disciplinary actions.
For example, they may be charged under FA Rule E1: Failed to comply with the rules and regulations of the Football Association.
County FAs have also warned that advertisement of such matches (on social media, etc.) is against the rules.

For young footballers aspiring to reach the next level, the prospect of being spotted by a scout is an exciting one. However, understanding what scouts look for can be the key to standing out from the competition. Most professional clubs develop player profiles tailored to their playing philosophy, style, and competitive level across different age groups and developmental phases.

Football Club Development Phases

1. Foundation Phase (Ages 6-12) – Focus on technical fundamentals and game enjoyment.
2. Youth Development Phase (Ages 13-16) – Tactical understanding and positional awareness.
3. Professional Development Phase (Ages 17-21) – Preparation for first-team football, mental resilience, and physical Development.

The Scouting Process

Most clubs observe and assess a player multiple times before making a final decision. Scouts compile detailed reportst o ensure they have a well-rounded understanding of the player’s potential. In addition to evaluating technical and tactical skills, scouts also gather background information on the player, such as family support, attitude, and overall character. This helps both the scouting team and the club provide the necessary guidance and support if the player is invited for a trial.

1. **Technical Skills**

Scouts assess a player’s technical ability. This includes proficiency with the ball, Receiving skills , Releasing skills, Scouts will look at the actions before the player is on the ball , whilst on the ball and after the ball is released.

2. **Physical Attributes**

Football is a demanding sport, and physical attributes often play a large role in a scout’s assessment. However, it’s not just about size and strength. Scouts look for players who can move quickly with and without the ball. Agility, the ability to change direction swiftly, is just as important as straight-line speed. Balance is also an important factor nd how well a player can hold off physicals Dules challenges while maintaining possession.

3. **Tactical Understanding**

Understanding the game is just as important as executing technical skills. Scouts look for players who demonstrate good positioning, pitch georgraph and awareness of the game’s flow, and the ability to read the play.

4. **Mental and Emotional Traits**

Scouts evaluate a player’s mental approach to the game, recognizing that attributes such as work ethic, determination, and attitude can be just as important as technical skill. A key factor in player assessment is their ability to handle performance problems during a match—whether it’s a mistake, a poor referee decision, or tactical challenges. Players who demonstrate resilience, adaptability, and a strong mindset stand out to scouts. The ability to stay composed under pressure, quickly recrecognising setbacks, and maintain high levels of focus and effort is what separates good players from elite prospects.

Trial & process in the UK

In the UK, some clubs offer selected players the opportunity to attend:

* Selection Matches – Test performances against other trialists.
* Development Programmes – Extended training and assessment with the club.
* Straight Trials – A 6-8 week period training and playing alongside academy players.

During this period, the club conducts a full assessment of the player’s ability, adaptability, and mentality in a professional environment. Exposure to high-level training and competitive matches allows the club to determine whether the player is ready to be signed.

All football trials and club invitations are conducted in accordance with Premier League and EFL regulations.

These rules ensure a fair and structured approach to player recruitment, providing equal opportunities for young talent while maintaining professional standards across all clubs

“One club’s loss is another club’s gain.”

A Player who is released or overlooked by one club may go on to thrive elsewhere. Can you name any players who have achieved this?

“You never know who’s watching.”

Always give their best—because the right performance at the right time could be the difference that provide an opportunity.

Thank you!

What began as a friendly five-a-side match turned into a fight for life when 32-year-old Regan Pearson collapsed suddenly on the pitch.

Sudden Collapse on the Pitch

Regan was playing a regular weekly game with colleagues at a leisure centre in Northallerton when disaster struck. Without warning, he fell backwards and hit his head on the ground. But the real danger was internal—he had gone into sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).

A teammate with first aid training immediately stepped in, placing him into the recovery position. But when Regan stopped breathing, bystanders began performing CPR while staff called emergency services.

Critical Response From Air Ambulance Team

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance deployed a Rapid Response Vehicle (RRV), often quicker than a helicopter in built-up areas. Paramedics Terri-ann Lonie and Tom Chatwyn arrived on scene with life-saving equipment.

“Cardiac arrest is a medical emergency,” said Paramedic Tom Chatwyn.
“If the heart stops and breathing ceases, survival depends on immediate CPR and defibrillation. Every minute counts.”

When the team arrived, Regan’s pulse had returned thanks to the quick action of teammates and leisure centre staff—but he was still unconscious, and his condition remained critical.

Emergency Procedure and Hospital Transfer

Concerned that Regan’s heart could stop again, the medics prepared for Rapid Sequence Induction (RSI) to secure his airway and ensure oxygen flow to his brain. With the on-site doctor already busy, another critical care doctor from a nearby air ambulance was called in to assist.

Regan was then transferred to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough, where he underwent further tests.

Hidden Heart Defect Discovered

Hospital staff discovered that Regan had an undiagnosed congenital defect in his right coronary artery. This defect had led to the cardiac arrest. He underwent open-heart surgery and had an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) fitted to prevent future incidents.

“You Never Think It’ll Happen at 32”

Regan, now recovering, reflected on the terrifying experience.

“At 32, you never think something like this could happen to you. The average age for a cardiac arrest in the UK is around 70,” he said.
“I can’t put into words how grateful I am—to my teammates, the leisure centre staff, and the medical professionals. Without them, I wouldn’t be here.”

⚠️ Cardiac Arrest in Football: The Hidden Risk

While rare, sudden cardiac arrest in young footballers is not unheard of. According to Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), 12 young people die each week in the UK from undiagnosed heart conditions—many during exercise or sport.

In football alone, over 60 players have collapsed due to SCA in England since 2018, as reported by sports medical journals and grassroots organizations.

Early CPR and access to a defibrillator can increase survival rates by up to 70%. That’s why the presence of trained individuals and readily available defibs is critical at all sporting events, amateur or professional.

Knowing CPR and having access to a defibrillator can make all the difference. Consider taking a course or talking to your local club or workplace about installing an AED.
